Akeena Solar, whose solar panels were invented in Saratoga and commercialized in Los Gatos, has put together a Solar Power Challenge that will encourage the adoption of clean, renewable power in Saratoga, Monte Sereno and Los Gatos.

Here are the general outlines of the Challenge: The first city to install 150kw of residential solar power systems using solar panels by the end of the year will win.

As an added incentive to get this program moving quickly, Akeena will provide an additional $500 discount to all customers — in addition to the State rebate (that declines on 12/31/08) and $2,000 Federal Tax Credit (that sunsets on 12/31/08).  The contest will run from September 1 to November 30th, leaving an additional month to get systems installed by the end of the year.
