Grass Roots and the Story of Stuff

Brad Inman is launching a new venture that mixes text, video and social networking. He spoke about TurnHere Video, Vocab Videos, Vook, recent change in reading habits and how video storytelling is a more effective means of teaching some complex concepts. Inman hopes to facilitate the collaborative work of “grass roots media.”

Looked at one way, Inman Real Estate Connect is an interesting marriage (collaboration?) between the “T shirts” and the “suits” with agents in between. This was the point/counterpoint interplay between RE BarCamp and RE Connect.

Debates yesterday continued to rage whether the more grass-roots, independent contractor status of agents (coupled with the “flatworld” knowledge of greater public access to information through the internet and more  internet-savvy agents) will change how real estate is practiced in the United States or whether the “staying power” of the corporate giants (whose shareholders have invested in creating powerful “brands”) will prevail.

Personally, as a Realtor with Alain Pinel I don’t feel any unresolved tension between these points of view because of the progressive attitude of our management to remain at the forefront of technological innovation; their respect for the professionalism, personalities and passions of their agents; and their customer service-oriented approach with the public.

A good example of both a grassroots movement and new media is The Story of Stuff. I urge you to set aside 20 minutes to watch this brilliant video. Take action to help us all find “another way.” Choose to work with those who care about more than stuff.
