Saratoga Arbor Day April 22, 2010

Forty years ago the first Earth Day was celebrated as a challenge to corporate and governmental leaders.  Now, it has become a standard part of corporate marketing in various parts of the world.  According to earthday.org, the day is now commemorated by over 1 billion people in 190 countries.

Saratoga, CA is celebrating today, April 22, 2010 as Arbor Day with and event at 4PM this afternoon at Azule Park including refreshments, tree planting and an opportunity to learn more about trees in the city.

Ironically, the City Council acted last evening on the fate of the ailing heritage oak tree on Fruitvale Avenue at entrance to City Hall parking lot and it will be cut down; one arborist insisted it was sick and had to go and another thought it had another 10 years of life.

The Heritage Tree Society is currently counting trees planted in the next five years and hope it will reach 2000 in 5 years.  Tree plantings have been very slow.  If you plant a tree or hear of someone who has please go to their Web site www.heritagetreesofsaratoga.org and put in the number where it says “tree count”.

This past March another heritage oak at the northeast corner of Quito Road and Pollard Ave. dropped because of imbalanced limb weight, wet soil and gophers!

Majestic oak trees are some of the many things I like about Saratoga.  They make it a great place to call home.
